Staying in an hotel in your home City is a rare treat. To celebrate my landmark birthday we stayed in the Hotel AMANO Covent Garden.
Disclosure: We booked our stay with a generous opening discount and were upgraded to a Goldy room when we checked in.
Back in the day my flatmate and I used to celebrate our birthdays (just days apart) with a party in our home. Now many decades later we live on opposite sides of London but still want to celebrate together. For this year’s Big Zero birthday we decided to stay in a central London hotel, spend the day culturing and the evening eating. With quality time in a roof top bar.
Hotel AMANO Covent Garden review
When I step into an hotel I want to feel special. Hotel AMANO achieved that straight away with an extravagant floral display right in the entrance, followed by a sleek chic lobby.
Where is Hotel AMANO Covent Garden
Covent Garden! More specifically just round the corner from the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Steps away from the Royal Opera House. A couple of minutes walk from Covent Garden Market and all the shops. Six minutes from the Courtauld Gallery. Ten minutes from the British Museum. Twelve minutes from the National Gallery.
Inside Hotel AMANO Covent Garden
Think Berlin cool. Sleek and chic. A palette of dark neutrals accented with great lights, black and white photos and fantastic flowers.
Hotel AMANO Covent Garden Rooms
There are 141 rooms that come in four different categories, Cosy, Comfy, Roomy and Goldy. Rising in levels of fanciness. All share minimalist decor, air conditioning, a flat screen TV, a tablet, wifi and really lovely toiletries. Mr CW had some work to do whilst I cultured and really appreciated the desk space.
We stayed in a Goldy room. Every thing was chic minimalism until you walked into the bathroom. What makes a Goldy gold is the bath. Quite the most glamorous bath I have ever bathed in. Naturally I had to clamber into the bath for a photo as soon as I saw it! My worry was that you would be seen from the outside but during daylight hours I tried to spy Mr CW as he waved from the bath but couldn’t see him. At night just close the curtains.
Enough about the bath. Overall the room was not vast but had enough room for your bags. The bed was huge and extremely comfortable. I had been worried that it may be noisy but in fact it was quiet and we slept well.
AMANO Rooftop Bar
The Rooftop bar at the Hotel AMANO offers views over the rooftops of London, quite why a view of the London Eye makes a drink more glamorous I don’t know, but it does. We popped up for iced coffees during the day and cocktails as the sun began to set. Perfect. During the day some people were sat tapping away on laptops in the shade.
Restaurant and Bar
Downstairs is the restaurant and bar, this is also where you eat your buffet breakfast. We visited in beautiful sunny weather, so a chic, cosy subterranean bar didn’t really appeal and we made the most of the rooftop. However I will be back to try out the bar just as soon as the weather turns.
What to do in Covent Garden
Covent Garden has pretty well everything you could want in a city. If shopping is your thing, this is the place to be with both High Street and smaller retailers jostling next door to each other. London’s Theatreland is on your doorstep. There are many restaurants in the area. Here are some of my favourite Covent Garden things to do.
Everything you could ever want to know about London’s trains, tubes and buses. Utterly child friendly but good for a grown up visit too.
Before the London Bobby started to patrol the streets of London there were the Bow Street Runners. The Bow Street Police Museum is housed in one of the very first London Police Stations complete with cells and tells the story of London’s policing. Fascinating.
If Opera and Ballet are your things then the Royal Opera House is for you. Even if you don’t have tickets for a performance pay the building a visit, there is a great cafe and good views across the Covent Garden piazza.
No holiday can start for me before I have visited Stanfords to buy a map. Stanfords has maps from all over the world. It also has a fine range of travel literature and map related memorabilia.
