DERBY DAY 2017

Epsom Downs is walking distance from our house. Every year in early June we pack a picnic and head up to the racecourse for the Derby.   Attending the Derby can be posh and pricey in the stands or cheap and cheerful on the Hill.  The Hill is where we head.

Derby Day 2017

This year we  went to the start of the race for the first time,  you get to see all the horses as they make their way to the starting gates.  Here is Wings of Eagles on his way to being a Derby winner.

Derby Day 2017

Seconds after the horses have all pranced past you, they all come thundering back, hurtling toward the finishing post.

Derby Day 2017No sooner had the horses gone past, we all turned tail and tried to run back to see the finish.  The Junior CW’s proved far more fleet footed and managed to see Wings of Eagles cross the finishing line.  Me: I wheezed into view just in time to see the photo finish picture pop up.

One of those lucky shots, didn’t realise it was him until we were at looking at the pics!

The atmosphere always looks like it’s buzzing in places like this and I’ve always wanted to go to Ascot near us!

Oh what fun, I do enjoy a day at the races and a little flutter on the winner.

Hi Catherine, cheap and cheerful is always the better way to go. I can imagine the sound to be quite something as the horses fly past! I try not to notice my youngsters youthfulness, it can be quite depressing when I do!

The race horses practice everyday up on the Downs and I always intend to go and photograph them but have never managed to get up early enough!
